Stereolithography (SLA) consists of a vat of photopolymer resin which has a laser shone on it. The contours of the laser path solidify and the platform on which the first layer is formed moved a step below. The same process continues until you have the desired object. Only one kind of material is used and typically only one laser is used. Support materials, if any will need to be made of the same material. Less expensive that PolyJet.

PolyJet is pretty much like inkjet printing. There are nozzles which throws out tiny droplets of photopolymer liquid which solidify immediately on the substrate under exposure to UV light. You can use different materials/different colors in this process. The layer thickness can be much lesser compared to the stereolithography process and you can gain much more control over the color and material properties compared to SLA. You can also use support material which will be provided from one of the nozzles during the printing process itself, which can be removed using water jet.

Although soft robotics promises a new generation of robust, versatile machines capable of complex functions and seamless integration with biology, the fabrication of such soft, three dimensional (3D) hierarchical structures remains a significant challenge. Stereolithography (SLA) is an additive manufacturing technique that can rapidly fabricate the complex device architectures required for the next generation of these systems. Current SLA materials and processes are prohibitively expensive, display little elastic deformation at room temperature, or exhibit Youngs moduli exceeding most natural tissues, all of which limit use in soft robotics. Herein, we report a low-cost build window substrate that enables the rapid fabrication of high resolution (50 m) silicone (polydimethylsiloxane) based elastomeric devices using an open source SLA printer. Our thiolene click chemistry permits photopolymerization using low energy (

1 mm) available on many low-cost SLA machines. This chemistry is easily tuned to achieve storage moduli, 6
